Re: Journal 62
I have just received my very first journal and I don't know where else to put this post so I hope it's ok here. I wasn't expecting it to arrive until at least later next week, especially with the bank holiday so that was a nice surprise indeed and I got an even nicer one on opening it! What an absolutely wonderful treasure of an item! Apart from the article on the Adventure of the Strange Ruby which I've had to skip for now as it's one book I've not yet read or got so I don't want to spoiler myself, I sat and read the entire journal cover to cover in one go! I have never found a magazine that I've wanted to read every article or even every page before, in fact I've had some that I barely opened or just flicked through after buying them, finding they had nothing of interest after all, but not this. This is pages of perfection, each one is so engaging, absorbing and enjoyable it's like reading one of Enid's own books, a joy to do so and just as difficult to put down.
It's one of those things that upon receiving it has given me that 'WHY have I only just discovered this exists?!' thought. I've no idea how I've not come across it once in all these years, maybe I just haven't bought or seen the magazines or booklets that it's advertised in, or if I did it didn't register at the time - I don't know, but I really really wish I had as I'd have signed up before the ink was dry on the first one! Alongside the books I have now not only got something else to read but to collect as well as I intend to make up for missing out so much by getting as many back issues as I can. I know I'm very late to the party here but thank you Tony (and anybody else involved) for making such a marvellous magazine .

Glad you enjoyed it, IceMaiden! As you say, the Journal is "an absolutely wonderful treasure of an item" - a feast for the eyes as well as for the mind!

Re: Journal 62
Glad you enjoyed it IceMaiden (even if you didn't read my article yet!!) The Journals are really worth having, as I can see you have found out for yourself!
I do think one of the problems, as I've said before, is that, basically, The Journal isn't advertised ANYWHERE - except on this website and a few others, I mean. I first joined the Society when I saw a small 'advert' for the Society in #The Enid Blyton Dossier' when I bought it in 1999. This is the only published book I've ever seen the Society advertised in.
I think occasionally it was also advertised in 'Book and Magazine Collector' but only if there was an article in there about Enid Blyton.
This isn't a criticism - its just a shame it can't be advertised elsewhere. As its an adult Society rather than aimed at children, there aren't many books it could be advertised in.

Re: Journal 62
I suggested before that some sort of reciprocal arrangement could be made with the likes of the Just William society and the Malcolm Saville society. We advertise their publications to our readers and they advertise the Journal to theirs. I would agree that these days nothing much can survive without advertising or publicity of some sort.Rob Houghton wrote: a shame it can't be advertised elsewhere. Re: Journal 62
Glad you enjoyed reading it, Ice Maiden. The journal will appeal to EB's fans.
Put the big attractive and eye-catching latest journal's cover on top of the front page of this website after the welcome greeting with the catchy phrase like, "Subscribe the scrumptious journal if you are really EB's fans" or something better. Now, people have to click on Fireside Journal button to go to the journal. People who do not know how to navigate online website or people who are not computer savvy will have tough time to even find the journal button let alone click on it. I'm not sure(only Tony will know this fact) but most people who have subscribed are elderly people or older people like me who want to reminisce the good old times of reading Enid Blyton. This is the sensible way to advertise and promote. I have been wondering for so long why this has not been done.
Forum at the bottom of the front page can go.

In a way I agree...but I'm sure many people never even look at the front page of the website. I very rarely do, but just go straight into the forums from emails that notify me of replies. I've always felt we need a 'strap-line' on the bottom of each forum page which can be clicked on to take you straight to the Journal section. But I'm well-aware this would take some reworking of the forum page so probably not feasible.

Whenever you type "Enid Blyton" using Google search, the website homepage is the second after Wikipedia. I believe this is the way most people come to this website. Then only they will click on the forum.

Re: Journal 62
Maybe, but I was thinking more of the people who sign up for the forum and post on here for months without even realising there's a Journal.

Re: Journal 62
André put an EBS icon (a tiny photo of EB) for me at the top of my computer screen in-between other icons of websites/forums that I tend to use often, so I can avoid typing and searching in Google. It's just one click on the icon and EBS opens up (the Society website). That was also the easiest way for me to check the puffin cam (until my husband added a PuffCam icon last week ).Rob Houghton wrote:I'm sure many people never even look at the front page of the website. A propos too much typing: I will spend much less time on my computer over the coming weeks into June. For one thing we'll fly on a trip to France in 10 days. Afterwards I need to work on 1.000+ photos in PhotoScape to resize them from 2 MB to 200 KB etc in order to attach them to e-mails to friends. That's very time-consuming, will take me at least 2 weeks.
But I'll check all EBS notifications in my inbox after mid June and will catch up eventually.
I'll also post this in General Natter.

Re: Journal 62
I mostly agree with this, it is only the regular forum users who go straight to the forum page as most will go to the Home Page and even then they look at other things on the website and often don't even bother to look at the forums. Where I don't agree is in the Google search as I think it differs depending where you live in the world. When I search Google for Enid Blyton we have been at the top for about ten years and have not been below Wikipedia at all. I still get emails almost every day telling me that the website has major errors which is why it doesn't do well on a Google search and for a fee these kind people guarantee to get us onto the first page of a Google search.sixret wrote:Whenever you type "Enid Blyton" using Google search, the website homepage is the second after Wikipedia. I've added the link to my favourites, so I don't have to rely on symbols on my desktop. Additionally I can export and import the list in case I have to switch the machine I want to use.Chrissie777 wrote:

Depending on the software you use, you should be able to use something like a macro recorder or a job manager, that does recurring jobs for you. When I was finally tired of converting pictures from one format to another manually, I took my time to check out the possibilities of Corel Draw 8 which I use, now within a virtual machine because neither Windows 7 nor Windows 10 supported it any longer.Chrissie777 wrote:A propos too much typing: I will spend much less time on my computer over the coming weeks into June.
