Yes, I too have met 'Mr Jagger' in the flesh and can confirm he's a jolly decent chap.

I was a bit frit of Moonraker when I first joined here, but after meeting him in the flesh I realised my worries were unfounded.
He even graciously allowed me to address him in private as Mr. Moonraker which was a real ice-breaker in cultivating our friendship.

We've had people who went by their real name at Enid Blyton Days or other Blytonian meet-ups but said that they didn't want their name mentioned on the forums, so of course members have respected their wishes.

I love it

It reminds me of one of the occasions when I was in hospital and due to undergo brain surgery as a result of my serious illness in 2010. The man who pushed my bed from the ward to the operating theatre was extremely kind and kept reassuring me that the doctors were very skillful and I should not worry about anything. When we reached the operating theatre he announced "I will now leave you in the capable hands of the beautiful Sophia Loren", to which the nurse in question replied "I have told you already that I am not Sophia Loren. My name is Brigitte Bardot!" I laughed so much that I no longer felt quite as anxious and thankfully all was well. At times humour really is a great medicine!

Yes, once we were formally introduced, I was more than happy for you to use my Christian name. Mr Moonraker was a bit of a mouthful! I also found it a little cumbersome to keep referring to you as Mr Pete-nine-zero-one-two-S.

I feel rather awkward using a user-name, especially in the vocative case (using the name to address them in a comment) - it just feels a bit fake to me, somehow. But if I don't know a person's real name, I have no choice but to do it; in other cases, I may know their real name, but not be sure if they want this known publicly. Even if I know they have no problem with this, I may not feel sure others reading the post will know whom I'm referring to. So there doesn't seem to be any simple solution.
My user-name is simply my initials, as I didn't have the imagination to think up any other one that didn't feel or sound ridiculous. I wanted to put full-stops in to make this clear, but, if I recall, the site wouldn't allow me to include full-stops. But my real first name is no secret, as I close most posts with it. I've noticed people address me as "MJE" on occasion, but they can feel free to use my real name if they like.

I'm always mindful of security on the internet which is why I use a nom de guerre.

In other forums where some use 'real names' when referring to each other, it can seem cliquey and exclusive to those who aren't in the know.

My preference is always to use user names.

If I came to know someone's real name through a PM or meeting in real life I would never use it in a public forum.
