Re: Enid Blyton Day
You must be a very patient and forgiving man, Tony. I think I would have blasted him over the telephone with some choice words if I'd been in your position, and not even mentioning he'd changed his mind is completely ignorant.
What a rotter!
What a rotter!

For further discussion of Mary Gernat, please go to this thread:

Hi there, My name is Roger How and my mum was Mary Gernat. She was an illustrator for Enid Blyton throughout the '60s and early '70s. She was contracted to Armada and Atlantic publishers. She would receive a job to do with a vague brief, which she would then do and send off to the publishers. They would then either accept it as is or return it with suggestions as to what needed to be changed. usually so there was enough room left for the wording. Mum did nearly always the jacket covers rather than the insides.Myself and my three brothers were always being asked to pull on a rope or pretend toclimb a tree as we were her subjects. When the publishers were happy with a cover they always returned the artwork , with margin notes, and with the final printed book cover. my mum safety clipped them together where they went into a cupboard and forgotten.I am in the process of scanning them all and intend to print them using high quality pigment based inks onto cotton based Bockingford paper. I then intend to sell them through a website, still in the making, On each print would be the original artwork along side the final bookcover, in either A4 or A3.
The idea is that they would make lovely unique gifts to fans of Enid Blyton. Bearing in mind that she illustrated literaly dozens and dozens books, there will be quite a choice including, Famous Five, the Pony books, mallory towers, St. Clares, the Mystery books and many others...............thanks for reading......roger

Hi Roger and a very warm welcome!
I was surprised to see we did not have a thread on your Mother in our illustrators section of the forum.
If it's ok,I have made a thread and posted a copy of your above post there,so people who are interested can more readily find you.
Best Wishes
Pete

Re: Enid Blyton Day
It is a great shame about the EB Day. I feel very fortunate to have been able to go to the (currently) last EB Day
Abi.
Still trialling other writers, but will eventually go back to reading a bit of Blyton! Just too many books...
Occasionally will pop in! xx

I quite agree Abi. We are lucky to have those memories.

Everytime I see a new post on this thread, I think it is Tony saying that there will be one this year.

Wishful thinking I'm afraid Nigel. I too am very grateful I was able to attend the last day - and isn't it a good thing we didn't know that at the time?

Yes you can imagine the tears. We could have organised a sit-in at Lodden Hall to protest.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Re: Enid Blyton Day
I wouldn't give up all hope of an Enid Blyton Day in the future. There are still potential speakers out there. Imagine if Helena Bonham Carter (who took the role of Enid in the 2009 drama) were to contact Tony and ask if she could be a speaker - and perhaps bring along her friend Johnny Depp!
And then there's Kate Winslet, who loved Enid Blyton books as a child and went on to narrate an audio version of the Faraway Tree stories. Could Tony possibly resist her?
Other possibilities include Maureen Lipman and Jemima Rooper.
Well, we can but dream!

You're teasing us now, Anita.
We could always have an E.B. Day, without the speaker and just the stalls! Oh and what about a film?
