Enid Blyton Day & General Meet Ups
Re: Enid Blyton Day & General Meet Ups
I think a general meetup these days would need to be over a video conferencing facility like Zoom.

Great idea Perce. We could sit in front of our book shelves.

Funnily enough, somebody from these very forums recently sent me a picture and video of their bookcase..

That's brilliant! A lot of thought must have gone into that.

Re: Enid Blyton Day & General Meet Ups
It's funny but it's not real. Someone has used photoshop or something to add different authors and titles to make a sentence. The biggest clue is that it's StePHen King not SteVen and that book is too thin to be IT.
We did bingo over Zoom last night and my cousin was joking about me trying to look posh/intelligent by being the only one to have a bookcase behind me, in light of all the comments about journalists/presenters/ politicians always filming themselves in front of books. It's where I always sit though!Katharine wrote:Great idea Perce. We could sit in front of our book shelves

Whether or not those books actually form part of someone's collection doesn't really matter. It's the arrangement of titles that's clever (assuming all those titles do exist, which I haven't checked out).Fiona1986 wrote:It's funny but it's not real. I did think it was a bit too clever and convenient to be true, but it's funny. Mind you, another dead giveaway is that the author of On the Beach is Nevil Shute, not "Schute". I should know, being from Melbourne.Fiona1986 wrote:It's funny but it's not real. It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

You were told to read the titles, not the authors.

He sent it to me too, Pete.
On The Beach by Nevil Shute is one of the best "disaster" books ever written in my opinion. Although numerous critics have mauled it for the unlikely story line of holding a car race just as the world is about to end, I found it quite moving. I've read most of his work and would recommend him to others.

Re: Enid Blyton Day & General Meet Ups
It's just the sort of thing we would do in Melbourne (although we didn't have the Albert Park race track back then), don't worry. Actually, I reckon a (really) final Aussie Rules footy match would be even more likely...John Pickup wrote: On The Beach by Nevil Shute is one of the best "disaster" books ever written in my opinion. If the world is about to end, people might as well hold a car race or whatever makes them happy!

I have never read that one John - My wife absolutely loves Nevil Shute's books.John Pickup wrote: On The Beach by Nevil Shute is one of the best "disaster" books ever written in my opinion.
I've only read one book by him, but I absolutely loved it, 'Pastoral' published in 1944.

Here’s the original work if anyone’s interested.
Of course it was clever to make a sentence out of book titles but it’s not nearly as challenging if you can pick from any book title ever created rather than what you have in one location even if you were allowed to order ones online.
