Nigel, please fill me in: what means being a wet blanket?

A damp squid is a similar term. A dull or depressing person who spoils other people's enjoyment.

I think you mean squib?
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

I would thnk most squids are normally wet rather than damp aren't they? Unless of course they are on top of a pizza.

If we got paid by the number of mistakes we make we would be 'squids in'!

More deja vu, I'm sure we've talked about this before (possibly in relation to squibs in Harry Potter). It's a damp squib as a squib is a type of explosive. A damp one won't go off. Though a damp squib is now usually used to describe something that doesn't live up to expectations. It's not really another way to say wet blanket.

And it certainly doesn't describe Julie. She always lives up to expectations!

Re: Enid Blyton Day 2013?
Hi all - just to add my thoughts. Like everyone, I hope there will be an EB day next year - a particularly good reason (apart from us all meeting up and celebrating our love of EB's work) is that it will be 70 years since the first Find-Outers book, Burnt Cottage, which must justify a focus on this work which we all obviously love. If Tony isn't able to arrange it, though, another thought would be a meeting at Old Thatch indeed (and lunch at the pub) and possibly a planned walk round Bourne End following the Peterswood trail. Any thoughts on that?

I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for an E.B. Day, but if that's not possible, then a meet up at Old Thatch will be great, seeing as you say, Sally, it will be 70 years since we were first introduced to Peterswood.

Maybe picnic at Bourne End instead of Dinton in that case then!
"You're so sharp you'll cut yourself one day!" Hunchy said going to the door
"So my Mother told me that when I was two years old!" said Julian and the others giggled.
