Hannah, this is from the PayPal 'Help Pages'. It might give you some insight (¶4) to the issue.

I don't understand it either as I did not notice any such extra charge when I paid my subscription to the EB society and also to CLAS (The Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society), both of which were converted from Euro to Sterling. However, perhaps it was there and I just failed to recognise it??!!?? At one stage I had a foreign currency account to facilitate my Scandinavian clients, but I had to abandon it about two years ago as the bank charges were just horrendous!!

I'll watch closely what information Paypal shows me when I renew my subscription for the journal.

You need to make a note of the actual exchange rate at about the time you do your transaction with PayPal by looking on a reliable website that quotes the exchange rates on a 'live' basis, then compare it with the rate that PayPal quote you in the transaction. I always use the BBC Market Data pages.

Yes, I've read that too. The Paypal exchange rate will be worse than the "real" one but I'll have to do the maths if it is more expensive than a better exchange rate plus the fees my bank charges for payments in other currencies.

That's all you can do, Hannah. I could use PayPal for my transactions with my server hosting company in the USA but have never bothered changing my payment method since I started it quite a few years ago.

I would be interested to know what your conclusions are when you do.

Hi Nick. My Journals arrived safely today.
I took them into the garden to start reading them after work.
I am really overjoyed with them.

Many thanks again Nick, for making them available, it is most appreciated.

(I hope your Journals arrive soon too Boodi)

Best Wishes

Pete

Thanks Pete and glad you are enjoying the journals that Nick so kindly made available! I hope mine arrive soon too, but the post here is very slow, even for local deliveries, so I doubt that they will come until next week at the earliest. However, they will be worth waiting for and I will let you know as soon as they appear.

Hi Nick, to my amazement they arrived about an hour ago, just as we were having a late lunch! I am delighted with them and thank you so much for going to the trouble of packing them and sending them to me. Rest assured, they have found a good home where they will be treasured. They are surprisingly heavy, so I don't think our postwoman was too amused at having to carry the parcel up to our front door!!!
Many thanks and all the best,
