Rereading the Find-Outers books

Post by pete9012S »

I'm so enjoying Tally-Ho Cottage which is set in the winter. I have already decided to read Secret Room next.
But what book to read after that? I've reread the books in chronological order a number of times, so wanted to try something different.
Then I thought of reading all the books illustrated by Treyer Evans...I decided against that. He is though, a superb illustrator.

Remembering an article on Keith's site, I had a brainwave. I will read all the books in Seasonal Order..
Starting with all the books set in winter, then spring..

This is the list I will be using to read through the books.

So, going by the above list my first six books to read will be:

1.The Mystery of Tally-Ho Cottage (Christmas) - The book I randomly started my reread on
2.The Mystery of the Secret Room (Christmas)
3.The Mystery of the Hidden House (Christmas)
4.The Mystery of the Strange Bundle (Christmas)
5.The Mystery of the Strange Messages (Christmas)
6.The Mystery of the Burnt Cottage (Easter) Hooray - Spring is here!

Interesting idea. It's an excellent series no matter what order you read them in.

You could use the 'Alan Freeman' method, reading them in reverse order as voted for on the 'Favourite' poll thread. So you would start with Holly Lane which only received one vote, and work your way up. However we need some more votes to eliminate the ties!

I've sometimes wondered whether it might be interesting to start with the books I like least, then move on to the ones I consider better, before finishing with my favourites. That would mean the series would feel fresh to me while reading my least-liked titles, so I'd be giving them my full attention and judging them on their own merits rather than comparing them to titles I like more. Maybe I'd come to see them - or at least aspects of them - in a new light. And my favourites would still be ahead of me so I'd have those to look forward to.

I’m rereading them in order if publication, the first time in many years. Im on Strange Bundle at the moment, I do enjoy the Christmas ones best for some reason.

I'm reading them in order, but with gaps in between.

I'm currently on Holly Lane and really enjoying it. I have one slight criticism of it though, which is that I don't really feel it's a five Find-outers book. It seems to be Fatty who is doing everything, the only other main contribution from the others is the Larry's missing cleaning leather. Other than that, it might just as well have been a one-off book about a boy called Fatty.

Most interesting Katharine. Thank you.
I've been looking out for how often Larry speaks in my re-read of Tally-Ho Cottage.
It's really not very much indeed.

Funny, I didn't notice any of this though when I read the books as a child!

Perhaps she should have kept Larry as leader. This would have guaranteed the prominence of his character and created an interesting, and potentially humorous, dynamic between him and Fatty.

I wonder how many agree with Booklover's comments from way back in 2005?
booklover wrote: 05 May 2005, 13:35 Without wishing to be too uncharitable, Larry, Pip and Daisy have a certain sameness throughout the series, and would seem to be there mainly as foils for Fatty to work off. (They're his friends too, of course!)...

I agree to some extent about Larry and Daisy, as despite reading the series many, many times I have no real image of them and they sort of fade into the background, unlike most of the other characters who have a more distinct personality, including Pip.

It's all about Fatty and Bets. The others just make up the numbers.

In The Mystery of the Missing Necklace a certain young balloon seller doesn't realise that he needs a licence to go pedalling (as in selling from the pavement).

A mistake that has been made by another enterprising youngster
