The Top of the Wall
I'm reading Five O'Clock Tales and in it is a story called The Top of the Wall, where an old man whose fed up of next doorbs children climbing on his wall. He gets given some seeds and when they flower the children's mother loves them so much she tells her kids not to dare climb the wall and ruin them. Enid Blyton ends the story saying the flowers have no name but if they ask the children they'll know what to call them and it seems the reader should know too but I can't work out what they are! They are tall, red and yellow and have a delightful scent so what are they? Roses? Honeysuckles? Sweet Peas? Am I overthinking it?!

Enid also wrote a story (I think in the book of Fairies) about someone who hides a necklace among some plains flowers on the top of a wall, and when they grew they were all the colours of the necklace, and they named them wallflowers.

Yes, it's called 'The Wizard's Magic Necklace'. I've loved The Enid Blyton Book of Fairies ever since I was a small child.

Re: The Top of the Wall
This is very much off topic, but since the OP's question has been answered, can I ask a flower question of my own? In our garden (now under snow) we had until recently a tall (6 foot or so) slender plant, which looked too slender to stand at that height, with a small (less than 2 inch) red-purple flower on top with a yellow middle. The leaves were more like fern fronds. We didn't plant it, it just appeared. (It hasn't survived the frost and snow unfortunately.) Anyone know what it might be? I could have a bash at posting a photo if I had the foggiest idea how!

Re: The Top of the Wall
Can you give me a step by step guide to the picture search method please, Boatbuilder. The reason I ask is because of a fungus growing on a tree in my garden- I'm not sure how bad it is and would like to upload a picture and get it identified

Re: The Top of the Wall
If you open that link in my previous post, there should be a small camera icon in the search bar in the middle of the screen. Click on that then either drag the image file from your 'File Explorere' into the area as stated (Try dragging an image here) and it will will automatically upload, or click on 'Upload an image' and that will show a 'Browse' button which will open your 'File Explorer' when clicked and then just select your file as you would when adding one to an email. Either way, you should then see some images which Google selects by comparing your image with those in its database. There will likely be many that don't compare, but I don't know what algorithms it uses in its comparison. Hope that helps, Jack.

I hadn't read this story IceMaiden. Here it is. I'm surprised it didn't contain any illustrations - but that might have given the game away!IceMaiden wrote: ↑02 Nov 2021, 20:32 I'm reading Five O'Clock Tales and in it is a story called The Top of the Wall, where an old man whose fed up of next doorbs children climbing on his wall. A lovely story. Did Dame Fiddlesticks bake a caterpillar cake for the old man?
