Could the author be meaning a short story called Peter's Big Magnet? I distinctly remember reading this story about a horrible little goblin/imp who takes things off the toys in the nursery. When he takes all the pins, needles and thimble out of the sewing box the toys use a magnet to make him stick to them and he thinks they've got hold of some powerful magic to capture him with. Can't recall any other magnet short stories at the moment.
