Philip Mannering's pets

Post by dsr »

I nearly put this in the games section, but I'm actually interested in a comprehensive answer, not just as a puzzle.

In the 8 adventure books, how many pets (named or otherwise) does Philip have? Not necessarily his own, for example Fank's bears in Circus would fit the bill.

Immediately to mind come:

Button, fox, Castle
Huffin and Puffin, some kind of bird and I think I can remember what sort(!), Sea
Busy Dizzy Lizzie, but I can't remember which book

And surely many more - let the combined wisdom work it out to save me the bother!

Anyone?

There was a mouse in the first book - Woffles I think it was called, and a rat that went up the leg of the summer school tutor.

Busy Dizzie Lizzy was in Valley I think and he had 3 rats in Sea. And was it Snowy the kid in Mountain?

That's a very comprehensive list Fiona. I guess that should answer dsr's question.

I was always quite envious of Philip's pets. In particular Snoozy the dormouse and Sally Slither the slow-worm, both of which I'd dearly wanted as a pet myself (though neither are suitable). I've never been lucky enough to see any dormice but I have found several slow-worms on roads and paths which I've brought home to the safety of my garden, the closest I could get to keeping one :D . Button the fox is another I really liked but I knew someone who had a pet fox cub and it was lovely initially but went wild when it got older and had to be released. Realistically, except for the Alsatians in Mountain, none of the animals Philip encounters would be good pets which is why they are so appealing in the books.

I love the surfing duck too, but if Philip adopted him as a pet, I wonder how he'd get along with Kiki??

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I have aged parents to keep amused during COVID.
My mum is an ex primary school teacher, the vintage of always having a nature table in the classroom.

So last week I risked life and limb to get a small blob of frogspawn. But frogspawn doesn't come in small blobs, only big ones, and I had to squidge a section to get it to break off.

Yesterday they all hatched and are happily swimming around in the Pyrex dish usually used for Shepherds Pie, which is balanced on top of the (unused) gas fire in their lounge.
