NB: Circus of Adventure , not Castle was the first I read - the castle in it makes me muddle the titles up!

What we think of her books as adults is irrelevant. They weren't written for us. When we read them as young children did we analyse every book and see the occasional mistake? No, we devoured them because they gave us what we wanted, thrills and excitement, good against bad, a roller coaster ride which we all wished we could be part of.
Enid wouldn't give two hoots what we think. Unless we were under 12 years of age.
I missed this post originally, but I couldn't have put it better myself.

The wateralls at the Monasterio De Piedra in central Spain have some fantastic waterfalls, some with caves behind like this one. I had the pleasure of seeing them in the 1980s when I stayed there, but in the winter when the waterfalls were frozen.

Re wonderful childhood books I loved Charlotte Sometimes by Penelope Farmer and Stig of the Dump by Clive King. Both are brilliant books but more stand alone. Charlotte Farmer wrote 2 others in the Aviary Hall series but they are a disappointment compared to Charlotte Sometimes. Enid Blyton wrote so many wonderful books for children that it is hard if impossible to find another children's writer so profilic and so good. Of course some of her books especially towards the end of her life were not good but that happened to many writers, eg Agatha Christie. I loved (EB)'s books as a child and as an adult I get a different enjoyment out of them. Indeed some of them including this one Valley of Adventure I read first time as an adult. I remember this one in particular as I thought I had read them all and was delighted to read a "new" one in my forties !!! I was captivated from the start. I also read the Adventurous Four (Andy, Tom etc) first time as an adult and the first one is another brilliant book. What a great surprise it was for me as I thought I had read all her books.

Charlotte Sometimes and Stig of the Dump are real gems, Irene Malory Towers. I read them numerous times as a child and have re-read each of them at least twice as an adult.

I didn't discover "The Secret Island" and the Adventurous Four trilogy before I was 53 years old and have reread them multiple times ever since (2008).

almost as many as the Rubadub mystery which is my all time favourite EB book although Valley of Adventure comes a close third ! For some reason I actually prefer Sea of Adventure to Valley, as good as it is.
