Welcome to the forums, Pet!
When a country decides upon the length of copyright, surely that decision should really only apply to works that had their first publication within that country. When dealing with works that were first published elsewhere, shouldn't the copyright laws of the country of publication apply?
I've always thought the same as you, Pet - that the best thing would be to harmonise copyright laws worldwide.
