How About the Boy Next Door ? I think the cover by Gilbert Dunlop is great.

I think I would go for The Boy Next Door too, a first edition with the Alfred Bestall illustrations, alternatively The Treasure Hunters with the plethora of illustrations by Wilson/Davies.

I'd go for either my favourite book from my favourite series - The Mystery of the Missing Necklace - or one of my joint favourite Famous Five books: Treasure Island or Smuggler's Top. Although, if it was about the wonderful Eileen Soper illustrations, I'd also throw in 'Five Go Adventuring Again' as I absolutely love some of the George and Timmy illustrations in that book! 
As I'm undecided about which Famous Five book to choose, I'd go for Mystery of the Missing Necklace just for the quality of the story.
