If I couldn't be Bill, I wouldn't mind being Block.

I can see the attraction in creeping about at night, signalling from the tower, pretending to be deaf, and in league with that wonderful smuggler, Barling.

George, of course.

I had my hair cropped and wore my brother's aertex shirts. I longed for a pair of grey flannel boys shorts like hers but my mother said 'certainly not-you are a girl' but she did let me wear navy cotton boys shorts in the summer hols. I wanted to wear these with my school blazer as all boys in the 60s did, but my blazer was purple--not the best colour!

If I were called 'sonny' by the bus conductor, that was a bonus!

I also admired Darrell Rivers---straightforward, no-nonsense, hot-tempered, fearless.

Most definitely Julian for me.

The Famous Five books were the first EB Books I ever read and as I was tall and blond when I was reading them (still tall but waved goodbye to the vast majority of my golden locks several years ago!! Luckily, my daughter has inherited them! ) then I really saw myself as Julian. It didn't help when the 1978 series came out and I could almost be mistaken for Marcus' twin brother!

Luckily for him, he doesn't look like me in the slightest now!

Mr Galliano's Circus was the first book I read for myself- and didn't I envy Jimmy Brown! Not only did he have sensible parents who would aid & abet him in running away to the circus, but he had Lucky the Wonder Dog. I wasn't allowed pets & Lucky was everything I wanted!

To go off topic

There is a bomb alert at Studland tonight!

In Enid's time, Studland was used as a practice area for the D-Day landings, and yet another explosive shell has been found containing 100 lbs of high explosive. The Knoll House Hotel, where Enid stayed, is still amongst the most expensive of Dorset hotels, and there is talk of evacuating it tonight.

I live about 15 miles away, but I'm listening out for the bang! 8)

best wishes

Wow, Viv. Hope all ok!

My maternal grandfather was an American serviceman called Arthur Revers named in a letter by my biological maternal grandmother. Allegedly In the area you mention with an American unit my mother and I have never been able to find.

Just made me think of him and if we will ever be able to find him and/or extended family. The USA census shows me it seems unlikely there ever was an Arthur Revers (that spelling) echoes of Bill Smugs somehow to my Mum and I.

Always wanted to be Carlotta Brown from the St Clare's series. Bombing around on horseback and turning cartwheels in the gym. Oh and ticking off that sneaky Prudence of course!

Another George!

Hmmm, "which character would you most like to be", then two dozen replies "George Kirrin" :-)

Me too, though I'd settle for being Daryl or Alicia from Malory Towers.

Hi Jayne

I loved Alicia too. Bit mouthy and "hard" but always up for a laugh!

Are you a secret detective or whatever Bill is then?

Let's just say I often have to drive through the countryside at high speed, going through red traffic lights in my quest for doing good!

I never have to go in hiding like Bill did, but I did have a cockatiel called Kiki.
