The character on the right about to enter the cupboard (Julian? ) looks just like Iggy Pop in his younger days (e.g. Lust for Life album cover)

Ha Ha!! It really DOESN'T look anything like Julian does it? I presume that's George he's supposed to be hustling into the cupboard too... And the guy who has just burst into the room doesn't fit any description in the book!
Some of Betty's covers were OK... some... but not this one. dreadful!!
Iggy Pop... ha ha ha.... I'll not be able to lose that image now... brilliant!!

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Oh please.... STOP repeating that awful cover here.... it's just all wrong... a horrible painting of what's supposedly Julian and George.... it just looks so wrong, and the nasty overall dirty beige doesn't help it....!!
Sorry.... i hated it back in 1970, and I hate it now!! They really should have used Eileen's original cover....
But Iggy Pop!! Ha Ha ha!! At least that makes it kind of funny!!

I'm more amused by that door that's about to fall off its' hinges and cause some sort of health and safety compensation battle!

Yeah, that too. What was Maxey thinking when she drew it??
Mind you, I thought that one was bad until just now, when I found this:
Have you ever seen such incredibly ugly faces?

I assume that's Anne at the front there - she reminds me of a Cabbage Patch doll!

I always hated the colour as well, and I don't like the way the picture seems to be "cut in half" lengthways. A really awkward arrangement.yarvelling wrote:Oh please.... Betty's initial 1967 cover was marvellous and one can't help but wonder why it was changed to the lurid version that came along after it??

You might think it's marvellous, it's just a wishy-washy purple mess, to me!

Re: Five Go Adventuring Again
Soper gets my vote as usual too, don't worry! Apart from the balanced composition (and easy-on-the-eye colouring), the drama of Timmy leaping at the villains - along with George's ready-for-action pose - captures the sense of going "adventuring again" much better than any of the other efforts.Moonraker wrote:

I'm glad to see from the Cave that this original dust jacket design was re-used for a couple of the more recent reprints - although I bet the text wasn't untouched!

Re: Five Go Adventuring Again
Another thought - and without repeating the two illustrations, I promise: how come Julian and George don't look a bit the same between Maxey's two covers? Is this another case of the same shape-shifting syndrome that struck her renditions of Uncle Quentin??
