Re: Errors in books
Compared to house prices around where I live, which average out at about £275,000 that cottage seems very expensive for what it is. I guess as its in the country and in a village, and is fairly picturesque, and also in a county like Berkshire, its the sort of price one would expect, but its really only a little more than a cottage!

I'll warm me with your echoes

Re: Errors in books
Buying a large land and build your own house is cheaper than buying a house with small land at least here in Malaysia. Here, some developers will sell lands for buyers to buy and build their own houses. Usually, around 3000 square feet for RM75,000. You can buy 2 lots of land i.e. 6000 plus square feet with the price of RM150,000. You can build a nice medium two-storey bungalow for about RM300, 000 complete with house plan(architect fees, draftman). The best thing is that you can choose your favourite location to build your house. Usually at the top of the hills with very good sceneries and atmosphere in rural areas or suburban.
Re: Errors in books
Just had a look on Rightmove, and £600,000 would buy a 5 bedroom 'townhouse' in central Ipswich - part of the former maternity hospital which has been converted into houses.
Further afield £600,000 would buy a 3 bedroomed 16th century detached house in Hadleigh isn't far from Ipswich or a 4 bedroom Grade II listed house near Woodbridge. There's also a 4 bedroom semi detached house for £645,000 near to where Enid Blyton did her teacher training.
That's really rather scary to think that house prices here aren't much lower than they are in Berkshire.

Re: Errors in books
I've probably got a spare £6.50
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

I haven't even got a spare tyre. I got a puncture this morning and had to use it.

I would offer to lend you my spare tyre, but unfortunately it's attached around my middle.

Wow, thanks all for the replies and the picture. Most interesting indeed! Where did you find that, Pete?

Lenoir opened his study door, on discovering George in his study, and shouted, "Block! Come here!" A bit odd as he considered Block stone deaf.

Did Block come? If he did, he wasn't deaf!
Julian gave an exclamation and nudged George.

Maybe he picked up on the vibrations!

That was something I picked up on when I first met it. Odd, isn't it.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)
