I haven't heard the audio tapes but I've seen the TV series and it does indeed stray far from the books, especially The Secret of Killimooin.
There's a thread here on both of the New Zealand series - Secret and Adventure:

Re: The Secret Series
The Secret Island is my favourite Blyton book and only The Secret Mountain comes close to that entry, although the others do have merit. I’m not keen on Prince Paul but the other characters introduced are fine. I would love to see a true adaption of Island as a tv series.

Great choices MysteryMagic. Which Enid Blyton adventure/mystery book did you read first when you started reading Enid Blyton?

Re: The Secret Series
The Secret Island is my least favourite, due to the fact that it hasn't got the "series" feel to it. I wonder if it was intended to be a stand-alone book. All further books in the series have a completely different feel to them.

I agree Nigel. It is a fabulous stand alone book.
I only read the second book for the very first time, Spiggy Holes as an adult and found it a bit derivative until I realised it predated many of the stories I thought it was taking plot devices from!

Re: The Secret Series
pete90125: The Treasure Hunters was my first Blyton - my mother read it to me and then I read it afterwards again as soon as the book was finished. I was then hooked and read everything I could lay my hands on. The FFO became my favourite series and The Secret Island is my favourite book.
Moonraker: I think Secret Island could well have been designed as a one-off book to begin with, the ending certainly didn’t feel like there was a sequel in the offing, what with the Arnold’s saying that their flying days were over and with Jack being adopted. I do enjoy the rest of the series with Mountain being the standout adventure.

What a great story to start off on MysteryMagic! A fantastic book. I think it is one of Julie's fave's.
I was trying to locate a first edition last week and was amazed at how expensive this book has become.
I have the 1950 edition (above right) which can still be picked up with a dustjacket at fairly reasonable prices.
Regards
Pete

Re: The Secret Series
You are right, Pete. One of my all time favourites, being the first Blyton book I ever read. Following by The Boy Next Door, another of my all time favourites.
