Re: Timmy - Timothy - Tim in the Books?
Well, I'm aware Enid approved of Eileen Soper's portrayal of Timmy even though her version didn't exactly match Enid's own mental image of him from the real-life dog that she knew — "the artist [Soper] has not drawn him [Timmy] quite as he looked — but then, she had never seen him, so how could she?"pete9012S wrote: Soper worshippers please help!!!
(That's from The Story of My Life, which I haven't read, but I vaguely remembered that quote from other discussions and found it here — this was a thread where we were discussing a dog breed that bears some resemblance to Soper's Timmy: http://www.enidblytonsociety.co.uk/foru ... 60#p196289" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Interestingly, whether or not the "real" Timmy had any Portuguese Podengo in him, the breed DOES have pricked ears!)
EDIT: Sorry, Pete, I didn't see your post above (where you quoted the same thing) until after I posted!

The cover you showed in your previous post is from "Le club des cinq et le vieux puits = Five Have A Mystery To Solve", this one "Le club des cinq au bord de la mer = Five Go Down To The Sea". But you might like to check out this, Pete: http://serge-passions.fr/c5_page_fiches.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Sidobre also illustrated most of the Voilier follow-up books.pete9012S wrote:

Re: Timmy - Timothy - Tim in the Books?
Many thanks Wolfgang. Very informative. I enjoyed this translated page of this book:
http://serge-passions.fr/c5_vieux_puits.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;THE FIVE CLUB AND THE OLD WELL
Original title:
FIVE HAVE A MYSTERY TO SOLVE
First release in England: July 1962
Translation: Mrs Glance 1964
INFORMATION:
Places: A house on the cliff island of the four winds
Characters:
Edmond , a strange boy, he tames animals .
Father Lucas , a fisherman. Emilio, Rémi, Carlo , criminals.
Theme:
The club of five must spend his holidays in a house rented by Gauthier.
But Mrs. Pichon, who must be absent, asks the children to keep her house, and to watch Edmond, her grandson.
The house is perched on the cliff, near a small port. The five accept.
But Edmond has a strange character, and he knows how to tame animals. Dagobert is soon at the feet of the little boy, and Claude does not like it at all.
She gets angry, then it is Annie who shows authority, to the surprise of all. Would sweet Annie have changed?
Father Lucas tells a curious story about the four - winds island. Is she haunted? Why is it dangerous to approach it?
And it is the tide that plays a turn to the five and fails on the forbidden island.
What to do ? Francois reproaches himself for his imprudence! The children decide to wait for the next tide to leave the island. A visit of the place imposes itself.
A shot slams.
Is there anyone on the island?
Only statues near a castle?
And what is the old well hiding?
And now the boat is gone adrift!
Who will come to the rescue of the five? will they break through the mystery of the island of the four winds?
" Look ! The boat has disappeared! "
The Famous Five intrepid prisoner is prohibited on the island. Claude, François, Mick and Annie, not to mention the faithful dog Dagobert, are immersed in the heart of an enigmatic puzzle.
The trees are whispering. Solitary, a castle stands in the middle of the woods. The old forgotten well contains a secret. Savage guards, like bandits, watch.
The children start ... Attention, Club des Cinq! It is dangerous to want to elucidate the surprising mystery of Île aux Quatre-Vents.

Re: Timmy - Timothy - Tim in the Books?
So is Timmy called Tim in Spanish too (I notice a Tim in the wording there), in contrast to the French translators who saw fit to rename him Dagobert? Interesting. The Spanish illustrator's rendition of him looks about halfway between Soper's and Maxey's!

Pete, you've really clipped that hedge well! Could you come and do ours please? I'd like Mr Galliano, with Lotta standing up on her horses back next to him and Jimmy and Lucky on the hedge across the garden - that OK?
