Heh it's only just occurred to me, seeing that original illustration for the first time, just how odd it must have appeared that five children got on a bus and instead of making straight for the back seat each sat next to a different person. That would be considered harrassment these days ;D

Isn't that the book where they each had to question a passenger as to their usual routine on market day?

Yeah. I had never considered before how the passengers might have viewed that tho. It must have been fairly obvious that they were being interrogated!

Many of are horrified by Joseph Abbey's illustrations. It is only nostalgia that makes me kind of like them! The one on the bus is absurd - there is no gangway, the perspective is all wrong and one side of the bus seems to be higher than the other!

Honesty behooves me to admit that the illustration below is not one of Betty Maxey's finest.
Is it better or worse that Nigel's pic??

Can you guess the Famous Five book this image was taken from?

Great photo, Pete.

I would guess that's from Five Fall Into Adventure, when they catch the bus to Ravens Wood?

Yes, that's the one I would have guessed too.

I can think of several options, this could be the bus the Five had taken in "Five go off in a caravan" giving Lou and Tiger-Dan the opportunity to roam around their their caravans, or Five are together again when they're driving to Professor Hayling, or Five on a hike together when they're using the bus to meet each other. I opt for Five are together again, but it's only a guess.

Come to think of it, I think there's also a bus drive in "Five have plenty of fun", "Five have a wonderful time" and "Five in Finniston Farm".

In my view bad illustrations are better than no illustrations.

The bus ride into Sheepsale is one of my strongest memories of that book. As nothing really happened on it, at least in terms of plot development, I assume this is because of the drawing.
