Gwen is a product of pretty awful upbringing. She deserves empathy and loving parents, not grievous bodily harm.

The person whose ears I would most like to box, although perhaps not literally, is Rose Longfield in the Six Cousins books, especially in "The Six Cousins Again" when she forces Roddy to give the puppy that Twigg arranged for him back to Tommy Lane.

Ooh yes I'd forgotten about her . As someone who longed for a dog that one really hits home and would have been the ultimate hateful thing someone could have done to me. Someone did eventually get me a puppy in secret and when I got home with her if I'd been forced to return her I'd have never forgiven whoever made me give her back.

And if their parents had brought them up properly in the first place they most likely would have behaved properly and wouldn't have strayed from the straight and narrow.

That's true. Their parents ought to be punished too for not bringing their children up properly .
