Hi Dinah, Looney, 70s-child, Francis, Wayne,

Thank you for all your good wishes.
Sorry it took me that long to get better, I developed a middle ear infection from blowing my nose too hard :(. And now we are flying for a week to Las Vegas on Saturday, so I haven't had a chance to read more from "Valley", because I'm busy packing, hairdresser etc.
We'll be back on 9/16 and then I can start reading "Valley" on that Monday if that's not too late?
Please let me know. I'll still be at home until Friday night (we'll fly very early on Saturday).
Sorry for the delay. I wanted this readathon so very much and now I messed it up    .

Have fun in Vegas, Chrissie! :D I love Vegas. It's so much fun. Incidentally, when I re-read River of Adventure as an adult, the description of Sinny Town reminded me of Vegas. Let me know what you think.

Hi 70s-child,

Thank you! I'm sure we will enjoy it.
I'm not into gambling (but my mother-in-law is). We got married in Las Vegas in 2011, so it will be nice to see it again.
My husband once stayed at the Sand's hotel, before they tore it down (it was Frank Sinatra's home away from home).

This time we plan a day trip to the North rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona (last year we went to Hoover Dam and enjoyed exploring their tunnel system). That's 4 hours one way.
Last year we stayed at the Luxor (my dad enjoyed the Luxor so much on his first trip to Las Vegas almost 20 years ago that we decided to stay there when we got married and it was indeed wonderful) and we did go to the Titanic exhibition which was quite impressive.
This time we can stay for free at my parents-in-law's time share :).

I was hoping we could also make a trip to Lake Tahoe (I'm a big fan of George Stevens' movie "A Place in the Sun" (1951, with Liz Taylor and Monty Clift) which has been filmed at Lake Tahoe, but unfortunately it's too far away (8 hours one way)).

Even though I read "River of Adventure" a few times, I don't remember much about the names of the towns along the river mentioned. I thought there was one town where they made movies? Kini Town or something like that?

Right now I'm watching "Last of the Mohicans" with Daniel Day-Lewis (somebody from EBS recommended it to me, because it contains a scene with a cave behind a waterfall) and look forward to watch those cave scenes soon.

I watched the film earlier this year, on my flight from Johannesburg to Doha, and enjoyed it tremendously, but I can't remember a love story?

The town was called Cine Town, I think, but the children thought it was Sinny, because of the way Oola, I think, said it. It was a town with a very theatrical facade.

70s-child, I never thought of Vegas until you mentioned it because I've never been there, but based upon what I saw on TV I can see a striking resemblance.

As cine is pronounced sinny, it is of little wonder that the children were confused! I could never imagine Cine Town as Las Vegas though. :?

Ming ... the love story was between the younger man and
the girl he meets and also (in a different way) between the older and
younger man.

Hi Ming,

There are actually two love stories in this movie even though the other one is not as obvious.
Cora Munro (Madeline Stowe) falls for Natty Bumppo aka Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis). Her younger sister Alice Munro feels attracted to Uncas (Eric Schweig), the youngest of those three last Mohicans (the oldest is Chingachcook played by Russell Means). There's only one scene where Uncas has a good long look at Alice...the only indicator for the audience that he also feels attracted to her.

SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS!

Uncas is the one who falls over the high cliff after fighting with Magua. Alice finally jumps over that cliff rather than to give in to Magua (Wes Studi).

I'm also looking forward to discuss "Valley".

I read the german and english books together and I can see that they left out some text in the german ones. So I'm happy that I have both...

Hi Dinah,

I'm very happy about that as well. It was one of the best investments reagrding purchasing books. Especially when I compared the illustrations by Stuart Tresilian with the few Tresilian illustrations in the German books by Erika Klopp Verlag (from what I understand new editions in German don't have the illustrations any longer). The British hardcover copies (mine were from ca. 1978) have almost twice as many illustrations.
Talk to you again after mid September...

Trust me, if you visited the capital of fake and cheese, you wouldn't wonder at it! :D Las Vegas is unique. It is as artificial and as disposable as anything in Sinny/Cine Town. It's also as glitzy. I know someone who grew up there. She told me her parents had to work hard at ensuring she had a normal childhood, since it is such a weird place to grow up in.

Let me guess -- on CSI?
Chrissie777 wrote: I'm not into gambling
Me either! In fact, I don't gamble at all, which does at one level defeat the purpose of going to Vegas; but the hotels/casinos are so much fun to visit.

Are we both talking about this movie? I can't recognise anyone from the list.

Sorry, Ming, mea culpa. I was under the impression that you were talking about "Last of the Mohicans" with Daniel Day-Lewis.
I have not yet watched "Tin-Tin".
