At Seaside Cottage

Post by Kate Mary »

I had a lucky find in a charity shop recently, a copy of "At Seaside Cottage", unfortunately not the original edition with Eileen Soper's illustrations, but a Green Knight paperback published in 1969. I didn't know this title was ever issued as a paperback. As it pre-dates decimalization and political correctness I'm hoping that the text is the same as the original. There are also a dozen other short stories in the book which have suffered a little updating, mostly names like Joan and Eric changed to a more modern Rosemary and Richard. Never the less, it is worth looking out for especially if you are a Secret Seven fan.

Kate.

I have the same book, also picked up in a charity shop some years ago. Don't think I've actually ever read it though: seemed a bit uneventful compared to the 'proper' secret seven books, but I was very glad to find it.

I also have a copy of 'The Old Mill', reissued in hardback 'centenary' edition, along with the other S.S short stories. :D
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

The Eileen Soper edition of "At Seaside Cottage" seems to be particularly scarce, there are no copies on ebay, Abe or Ukbookworld and just a few copies of the Green Knight paperback edition. Never mind, we have all the Soper illustrations on the Book Listing.

The illustrations of this book in the book listings are really lovely. I've never noticed this book before, until the mention in this posting. This looks such a lovely book, one I'll keep my eye open for, even though it is quite rare as Kate Mary says.

I too have the Knight paperback edition, though the story isn't much to write home about without the original Soper illustrations - it's great to have the opportunity to see those in the Book Listing.

I noticed that this book wasn't in the Book Listing, so I have now added it, along with A Basket of Surprises, so you can now find it under Knight Story Books and see what some of the titles were originally and where they came from.
