Thanks Eddie for those two website links. I have bookmarked them for future reference.

I was sad to think that I did not have a boy next door when we lived in our old cottage - but at the end of our massive garden was the vicarage.

I climbed up the high wall when I was about four and discovered the vicars son playing in his equally large garden.
He was a quiet, amiable sort of fellow.

We had a short chat about this and that and then I ambled back to our kitchen for some lunch with my Mum and Nan.

That was around 1972. I often wonder what became of him and what he made of a strange young boy popping his head over his garden wall all those years ago...

You're welcome, Nigel. They are two excellent bookshops for collectors. :D

Nice one, Rob — I have to admit, when I first found out that Enid had written a book called The Boy Next Door (I'd never heard of it until a few years ago), that was the first thing that came into my head!

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

When anyone mentions 'the Boy Next Door' (the book) I always get that song running round in my head - so I thought I'd give the same thing to a few others!

I'd never heard it before! But then I rarely see any films, old or new!

Thanks Eddie - I'm just an old movie buff! I have about 400 DVDs of just musicals, and then a load of videos of classic non musical films. :-D

Wow, that's some collection, Rob. I also love the old films from my childhood and youth: musical and non-musical. I seemed to spend much of my free time in the pictures in the 1950s. A seat in my local cinema, the Gaiety, cost just 9d (4p) for under 16s. When I lived in Stourport-on-Severn, I used to go to the children's pictures at the Haven on Saturday afternoons for just 3d (a little more than 1p). For 3d the kids were treated to Superman, Captain Marvel, Brick Bradford and Sandy, Flash Gordon and other serials. There were also short Westerns starring such wonderful stars as Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and Johnny Mack Brown and a few cartoons. I also had 3d to spend on sweets. Great days! :D

Yes - it is a big collection, and I've recently converted a spare bedroom to house them all in the same place. Well - got my dad to put shelves up! ;-) I collect Hollywood musicals particularly, and many have come from America as they aren't available here - from the Jazz Singer in 1927 through to films like Mama Mia!

Now I guess I'm derailing this thread, lol!! Apologies!

Don't worry Rob it's very interesting. Do you plan to digitize your collection at all?

I wouldn't know where to start! I guess its the way forward...but I do like to see rows of DVDs on a shelf! I guess its a bit like LPs - CDs never really replaced them aesthetically! 8)
