House Names

Post by Julie2owlsdene »

We've had secret passages, etc, from the books. So how about house names. The many different house names that people use is fasinating. How many did Enid use in her many books, I wonder. As I've only read just a small proportion of her books, I'm sure there must be many house names she used that are new to me. The ones that spring to mind at present are:-

Owls Dene - Famous Five
Two Trees - F.F
Big Hollow - F.F.
Smugglers Top - F.F
Blue Pond Farm House - F.F
Red Roofs
Holiday House
Black Swan - Houseboat. Boy Next Door.
There must be loads of others. :D

hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes

And some more

Willow House - The Secret island
Moon Castle - The Secret of..
Rat-a-Tat House - The Rat-a-Tat Mystery

I think Craggy Tops, Kirrin Cottage, Smugglers Top and Owls Dene probably remain the best remembered and most evocative of Blyton's houses.

I think she's great at naming houses and also towns and villages. The names are just so atmospheric. I think she comes up with the best pretend names of houses and villages of any author I've read. Well, I suppose Thomas Hardy was pretty good too, and also Antonia Forest. But EB came up with so many more names ...

Yes her place and house names really do fit the stories so well. I remember great confusion as a child trying to pronounce the village of Penrhyndendraith from The Ragamuffin Mystery.

Also if you read some of her stories for younger children such as are found in the Reward series books you will find wonderful places like Cuckoo lane, Toadstool Village, Sunflower common and many others. Many of these stories contain wonderfully named characters also. I can think of Higgle and Piggle, Tick and Tock, old Mother Doodah, The riddling Wizard and there are countless other examples of pixies, gnomes and fairies with beautifully simple but very evocative names.

Obviously meant something to her, as she named a location, Spiggy Holes.
