Sounds more like a script that Robbie Coltraine would have spoken than Blyton's words Nigel

There's that word Masterful again. Refered to someone here on the forums, if I remember rightly :D

A small steak I think. But Nigel, you must remember that a Cornish Pasty is spelt with a Y at the end. What would your ancestors say?

Hellfire, they must be turning in their grave. I didn't realise that, old thing, thanks for telling me! We shall be down in Polperro next month, so I will probably have a few! Incidentally, Cornishlight seem a bit confused; they spell it both ways on their homepage! By the way, is the plural spelled Pasties or Pastys? I would imagine it's the former.

I also have trouble with Tribute. For some reason I think it's Tribune!

I stand corrected! Five On A Hike Together is on my re-read list, I have yet to purchase a nice early edition. Somehow, I cannot see the following text surviving into any later editions of this book, the tone is once again incredibly harsh.

I am almost certain that this scene or an adaptation of it appeared in one of the two Comic Strip parodies of the Famous Five.

I guess this begins to get confusing now. One Pasty, two Pasties. My son in law comes from a long generation of farmers. So say its a Y. Also could be said about the cream tea. Jam first then cream. Some do cream then jam.

I wonder if its anything to do with class divide : :?

Julian would know, I'm sure :D

I was always led to believe that the cream tea thing depended on whether the cream tea was in Cornwall or Devon: one puts cream first, the other jam first...? :?

My husband, who is Moroccan, made a grave mistake the first time he ever ordered a cream tea in an English tea-room (I've told this story before - sorry for repeating myself but it seems to belong here!) A tray was set before him containing a pot of tea, a scone on a plate, a dish of jam and a dish of thick, clotted cream. My husband poured tea into his cup, spooned the cream into it and stirred. The cream broke up, great yellow blobs of it floating unattractively on the surface of the tea. It was only after he'd finished doing that that I noticed what he'd done and told him that the cream (and jam) were meant for the scone!!

I always put the jam on the scone first, then the cream.

Yes, lovely story Anita. Glad to hear you put jam first then cream.

Steph, you'll have to try it this way, it's much nicer :D

I will next time, but we don't have cream teas very often! :D

I spent a fortnight holiday in Devon when I was about 7, insisting I didn't like clotted cream. Finally, on the last day, my family persuaded me to try it - of course, I loved it. And I couldn't even try my usual trick of making out it was someone else's fault!

I sort of walked into that one with my eyes closed!  Trouble is, it's very hard at times to tell the difference between reality and parody with Enid Blyton, particulary with books written in the early 1950s.

I resolve to hasten the process of re-reading, as I have have no desire to be taken in like that ever again.
