Camping on Lundy Island sounds idyllic. As a child I collected stamps for a while and I used to like the ones from Lundy, with pictures of puffins on.

Hey! Why aren't I invited to explore the Scottish islands with you? I can .. I can ... hunt wild boar! Yeah!
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.
I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate.
All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.
Time to die.

You're welcome, Moose. Your antlers will come in very useful for hanging our coats and pots and pans on!
Does/did anyone else here collect stamps, by the way? I used to belong to a stamp club when I was about 10, and buy stamps by mail order, but it got too expensive after a while. The most picturesque ones were from Ajman - I had a set of beautiful stamps from there, large-sized ones featuring butterflies, which I framed and hung on the wall.
Sorry to be so off-topic!
Er - I wonder what the stamps of Tauri-Hessia looked like?!

It was idyllic, even the money that you spent at the shop was in Puffins. No liscencing laws there either and I disgraced myself getting drunk on cider one night (the shop was also the pub for the resident population of about 12 people) and everything was terribly jolly until I snapped our tent pole in two!Anita Bensoussane wrote:Camping on Lundy Island sounds idyllic. Crikey - you bartered in birds?! Dead or alive?[Tony:] It was idyllic, even the money that you spent at the shop was in Puffins.
Bet Nigel can tell a few stories like that![Tony:] No liscencing laws there either and I disgraced myself getting drunk on cider one night (the shop was also the pub for the resident population of about 12 people) and everything was terribly jolly until I snapped our tent pole in two!

I love Circus - its comes a very close second to Valley and I really like it. I prefer Mountain over Ship and have no idea why Mountain is consistently the least favourite. I love the description of Tauri-Hessia and the way Bill turns up with the food van. THe bit with Phillip and the Bears is a bit unbelievable but I don't think it does the story any harm.

I tend to think the bit with Philip and the bear sums up just what the Adventure stories are all about. They are about children doing impossible things: tracking down villains and thwarting evil plots. The bear scene seems to me to be the ultimate 'Philip with animals' scene, and to me works better than any other similar scene (the one with the 'wolves' in 'Mountain', for example.) Enid builds up Philips natural 'pied-piper' power over animals throughout the books, and so by the time he comes to pacify the bears in 'Circus' it actually comes across as being the obvious thing to do. I think the whole scene is actually described very realistically: though the reason for the bears restlessness DOES seem a bit contrived, just existing to give Philip a chance at proving himself so they can stay with the circus.
If I was a fan of James Bond and science-fiction, then I would probably love 'Mountain', but as it is it contains all of the elements I dislike in a book: it's just too 'science-fictiony' for me!

Sorry to go off topic but to answer Anita's earlier reply re stamps.
The answer is yes I do (although Sue will probably say there is not much I do not collect).
If I recall you live in Essex. There are certainly Stamp Clubs or more correctly Philatelic Societies at Benfleet and Basildon (which I used to belong to) maybe worth checking with your local library for addresses. If not I will help as still have one or two contacts in the area.
