Who's the cleverest character of all?

Interesting that education is brought up. I would guess that Jo was not literate - can't remember whether it was said she was or not but I can't see how she would have been - and Fatty would presumably have been at one of the best schools in the country..

DIdn't Jo start going to school when she was packed off to live with Joan's sister? Was it her sister? No way would I win any prizes for intelligence but I just might be in the running for an award for the worst memory!

Jen, you have remembered it correctly!

I think the cleverest character is Uncle Quentin, one of the greatest scientists the world has ever known, not counting Einstein. But he has the advantage of being a learned grown up, so I'll say:
Cleverest teenager: the marvellous Frederick Trotteville.
Cleverest younger character: the tiresome Susie.

There's more than one type of intelligence though .Quentin might have been brilliant scientifically but he seemed to lack social intelligence on a rather lamentable scale. Fatty was much better rounded - academically he was brilliant, and apparently gifted at sports and acting and all, but he was also socially very capable.

As much as I enjoy Fatty he was certainly too good to be true. There seems to be literally nothing that he did not excel at or know about. Thats unreal in anyone especially a teenager. Possibly Blytons most well rounded characters were the adventure kids, they were resourceful, sociable, fairly intelligent in the academic and general knowledge senses and they were quick and eager to learn. Uncle Quentin always struck me as a sort of nutty professor type.

Nobody's mentioned the shy, brilliant young Pam from St Clare's yet, who would have been considered for head girl had she not been a shade too young...

Then of course from the same series you have the artistic genius Lucy Oriel, and you have the musical genius from Malory Towers too (was it Irene?).

For me it has to be Frederick Algernon Trotteville and I'm sure he would be the first to agree with me!
If he were alive today I'm sure he would be a rather rotund,eccentric confirmed bachelor with a closet full of secrets and a collection of small dogs.It's quite possible that he would also be "known" to the local Police!

I agree, Tweenid. (I can't get used to that name!) I see him as a rather eccentric character - never having married. He was in love with Elizabeth Hilton (she refused to answer to the name Bets, post puberty); however, she went slightly off the rails and he never found another love in his life - at least, not human. She is now a widow, still living in Peterswood, and is still a great friend of Frederick's (he too now refuses to be called Fatty). In fact, she is the "Hastings" to Frederick's "Poirot". In fact, I am certain if it weren't for Frederick's ego, she would be Peterswood's Jane Marple!

I imagine him now to be the English equivalent of that great Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. He still assists the police (having joined the police force, but leaving due to his constant refusal to obey orders) with mysteries in the district. In fact, the success of the current Chief Superintendent is due, mainly, to Mr Trotteville.

There is now no police presence peculiar to Peterswood. A regular patrol from Marlow is all they get.

Frederick does, however, still practice at disguises!
