Gosh! This is a tough one! I'm going to have to do some serious thinking before I vote. I love them all so much!

Kitty, A Peep Behind the Scenes can be read on the Project Gutenberg website. I just took a look and it seems awfully maudlin:

Yes, it's a strong series. There are only two Find-Outers titles I don't like as much as the others - Vanished Prince and Banshee Towers.

Ooh, thanks! Will have a look at it - gosh, I bet children were pleased when E Nesbit came along, and books became cheerful!Anita Bensoussane wrote:Kitty, A Peep Behind the Scenes can be read on the Project Gutenberg website. I just took a look and it seems awfully maudlin:

I don't really like Banshee Towers as much either, I'm not sure if it's just because it's the last one. I find it quite upsetting actually.

Yes, E. Nesbit's characters must have seemed so refreshing. I wonder if Enid Blyton ever read any of E. Nesbit's books? Many of them were first serialised in The Strand, which Enid read as a child, so surely she must have done? But it's funny that she doesn't mention E. Nesbit in The Story of My Life , when she talks about authors she read in her youth.

Re: Favourite Five Find-Outers book
Hi everyone
Time for a review of the poll. Basically, the results so far show how even the books are - a lot of top notch stories, with no book standing out as a clear favourite - 10 out of 15 books have received at least one vote, and equal leaders are currently Missing Necklace, Invisible Thief and Strange Messages with 3 votes.
New members, please cast your vote for your favourite Find-Outer (and Dog) book!
Edit: Added the stats and names of the books.

Missing Necklace for me. I'm sure I was a member when this thread was started. I cant think why I didn't vote earlier.

Re: Favourite Five Find-Outers book
I did vote earlier when I was trawling through these forums; didn't write a post though. It's got to be 'Invisible Thief' for me (although there are several others which I like: 'Burnt Cottage', 'Disappearing Cat', 'Missing Necklace', 'Pantomime Cat', 'Strange Bundle', 'Tally-Ho Cottage' and most of all 'Strange Messages', which just lost by a minor margin. It's a great series, full of mystery and detection, but oh, the humour! It's got to be the best thing present.

"An ice cream," said Snubby promptly. "Who's coming to buy one?" The Rubadub Mystery

Re: Favourite Five Find-Outers book
Thanks for resurrecting this thread, booklover! I did vote but can't remember which book I picked. The trouble is, I usually think that the book I have just read is the best book of the series. I haven't read any for a while, so would probably pick Disappearing Cat or Invisible Thief. But then, I do like Tally-Ho...

Re: Favourite Five Find-Outers book
Like Ming, my favourites are Pantomime Cat and Strange Messages. I had to have a really good think about it, but went in the end for Strange Messages, which just has the edge for me. Very difficult though. Missing Necklace comes pretty close, too

Re: Favourite Five Find-Outers book
Having never heard of this series until a few weeks back it would appear that they are rated higher than the FF and SS books.
Are they worth a read?

Re: Favourite Five Find-Outers book
Of course they're worth a read! Mystery, detection, humour.... everything is there. It's amazing that they're not known as well as Famous Five, but I guess "Five Find-Outers and Dog" doesn't go that well - especially if compared with that instantly children-hooking "Famous Five." However, whatever popularity, they're wonderful - start reading The Mystery of the Burnt Cottage!
