Enid Blyton and Ginger Beer

Having paid a return visit to The Boy Next Door after well over 30 years, I found this delightful reference to ginger beer towards the end of the book.

Well, that was a feast! Enormous slices of creamiest birthday cake the children had ever eaten and iced ginger-beer, so cold that it made their throats hurt when it went down. But, as Lucy said, it was a "very nice sort of hurt!"

A very nice sort of hurt. Only Miss Blyton could come up with a description like that!
