Noddy’s 70th Birthday

Post by Eddie Muir »

There is a two page article entitled “Hooray for Noddy!” to mark his 70th birthday in the current issue of Yours Retro (Number 19, £3.99).

This information in this post is especially for Anita.

 Happy Birthday, Noddy! I'd be interested to read that article or any other commentaries about him that might be published — it'd be nice to see a balanced and fair view of the original Noddy books, if anyone has ever written one. (I don't mean totally uncritical, but just preferably without going on any more than is necessary about alleged utter inanity, racism, or supposed questionable relations with Big-Ears... )

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I wonder if we'll ever succeed in turning Anita on to Noddy Eddie! :D :D

Don't worry, Pete, we all know now that she's made a new start in a new home, she's decorated the place absolutely all over with her formerly secret Noddy collection — Noddy wallpaper, Noddy prints on the walls, Noddy tablecloths, Noddy bed linen, Noddy lampshades, Noddy cups and plates and bowls... EVERYWHERE.

Thanks for this information Eddie. I'll have a look for it in WH Smiths. Not sure I'll actually buy it though. I'm more or less in Anita's camp on the subject of Noddy.

I didn't realise you too felt a possible antipathy towards Noddy John & Eddie! :D

Poor Anita - she'll never live this down, will she?!

Talking of the kinds of accusations in that Daily Mail article in the other thread, I remember reading somewhere that there were complaints that that Noddy stamp was "racist" because it depicted a black child reading Noddy, which obviously implies that black children are too stupid to read anything more complex than Noddy...  :x

Those stamps were possibly issued to commemorate Enid's 100th Birthday in August 1997 - albeit a month later.

I have a 'first day cover' set of those Enid Blyton stamps mounted on a card - and also postcard-sized versions. :-) yes - they came out for Enid's centenary in 1997.
