Enid's Dressing Table

Post by Tony Summerfield »

I have recently received an email that I hoped might be of interest to somebody and I am posting it below:-

"I have in my possession Enid Blytons dressing table which she had in her house «Green Hedges»

My father died in 2016 and my two brothers and I have inherited among other things this dressing table. I now live in France and my brothers in London. As my parents had moved to France after moving from Wales the dressing table is at the moment with me. Before I put it into the local auction rooms in Marseille where I don’t think anyone would really appreciate it, as they don’t really know a lot about Enid Blyton or the importance she had to my generation when we were children growing up in England, I wondered if you might know someone who would like to have it. It was estimated by the Amersham auction rooms between £100-£150. The big problem is of course, getting it back to England, unless you have members in France? The dressing table is in good condition, some of the satin has been worn away on the front draws and could be easily replaced, the rest of the satin is fine just needs a good clean, the wood is in good condition the mirror and glass on top as well.

My parents lived in Amersham for over thirty years before moving to Wales. My mother often went to house sales and to the auction rooms in Amersham every week as far back as I can remember.
She bought the dressing table in the late sixties or early seventies, she told me that it had belonged to Enid Blyton and that she had got it from Beaconsfield, she was very proud of it !

My mother, later, wrote to Imogen Smallwood for written confirmation. Pleased find enclosed the letter from Imogen Smallwood and some photos."

I haven't included the letter from Imogen, but it was written in 1989 and it confirms that this was the dressing table that Enid used in her bedroom at Green Hedges.

Interesting, I do hope it finds a good home, preferably in England.

Wow - that's quite a find, with all the fabrics on it and the lovely mirror! What a pity there isn't an Enid Blyton Museum that could buy it.

Interesting find! It really is a shame that there isn't a museum etc to take it.

I can safely say that I do not share Enid's taste in dressing tables!

Now if we could just buy Old Thatch (and ignore the continuity error in her not having it when she lived there!) we could put that [and other stuff of course] inside and make it a museum and gardens.

"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.
