Dickie Birds

Post by Viv of Ginger Pop »

This evening I thoroughly enjoyed a programme on BBC TV 4 called Birds Britannia. My ears pricked up 34 mins in when they said that in 1945 a book was published called "Garden Birds" , and that was the first time this phrase appeared in print in Britain .

I've quite a good collection of Blyton's wildlife books, but I'm at home and they are down in Poole. I'm now looking forward to going through The Bird Book (1926) and Birds of our Gardens (1940) to see what phrases Blyton used.

I was also interested to learn about the Victorian Dickie Bird Society, and by the wonders of Google was able to find out more. I wonder if our Enid was one of the 1.1million children who took the pledge to care for the birds
