Books Quarterly
I thought you might like to know that Enid Blyton is mentioned in the current *Books Quarterly in an article entitled "Smugglers, flashing lights and invisible ink" by Lauren St John.
* Books Quarterly is a magazine given free by Waterstone's to its card holders and can be picked up at any of their bookshops. The card, which is a points reward card, is issued free on request.

Re: Books Quarterly
I'll look out for that if I go to Waterstone's, Eddie. Is the reference to Enid Blyton positive?

Seriously, thanks for the tip, I didn't even realise there was a magazine, obviously never read all the blurb that came with the card

I've just stopped off in town, gone into Waterstone's, filled out the form, received and signed my new card -----only to find the current mag has all gone. "Don't worry," said the man, "there'll be a new one out in October!"

Re: Books Quarterly
I have a Waterstones card so I shall try to pick up a copy in the next couple of days. I am pretty sure the article will be positive. The shop is hardly going give space in its members magazine to an article which puts people off buying books.

Re: Books Quarterly
Gosh, I've started something here!
The article is positive about Enid Blyton. Here is a piece from the opening of the article:
At the height of Rhodesia's Bush war, I (Lauren St John) aged11 spent a lot of time dreaming about having proper adventures like the characters in Enid Blyton mystery novels. At weekends, I'd lean against a tree in our game reserve, watched over by our pet giraffe, and work my way through Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, and Blyton's Famous Five, Secret Seven and Five Find-Outers series over and over again, wishing I had access to secret passages in castles, or could send coded messages about mysterious lights or pursue smugglers through pea-soup fogs.
Later in the article she writes:
I like my suspense to be heart-racing, but with a happy ending, and I don't think I'm alone - there's a reason why Blyton is still one of the biggest-selling children's authors on the planet.
There are one or two other references to Enid Blyton.
I'm sorry you weren't able to get a copy today, Nigel. I have finished with mine and so will put it in the post to you.

Re: Books Quarterly
Yes, thanks, Eddie - all received and read! I must say, I liked the look of Lauren St John's Dead Man's Cove - I will buy a copy of that!
Review includes: "...this adventure series which echoes everything I loved about Enid Blyton's Famous Five when I was younger. In the first of the series we meet Laura Martin, an orphan and aspiring detective who goes to live with her uncle in the fishing town of St Ives...finds herself surrounded by a mystery...strange goings on...silent boy, a message in a bottle and strangers lurking in the night."
Sounds wonderful!
