Fact or Fiction?

Post by Tony Summerfield »

Our papers contain frequent articles which mention Enid Blyton and her characters and it is amusing to read some of the comments that are made - are they fact or fiction?

In a recent article in the Daily Telegraph, BBC Breakfast presenter, Sian Williams, was being interviewed on holidays. One of the questions was:-

And the best hotel you've stayed in?

Knoll House at Studland Bay, Dorset. It's a friendly, family-run hotel, very old-fashioned and where Enid Blyton wrote the Noddy stories. A musical melody comes over the intercom when it's time for dinner, which is lovely. The hotel has an indoor pool, tennis courts and is situated on the beach at stunning Studland Bay, which seems to have its own microclimate.

Definitely fiction here!

Annoying, Tony but it's also part of a natural process of evolution. Because Enid Blyton's influence, through her writing, remains a living force, it will sometimes take on a life of its own. Especially when we remember her many magical characters, we shouldn't be surprised at instances of the writer herself becoming 'the stuff of legend'. Perhaps this process can be nudged in the right direction but pouring the cold water of realism upon such erruptions may not be terribly effective.

The Noddy display in the glass cabinet in the hallway?

The rest of the article is correct - the hotel is in a stunning location, no wonder Enid loved it!

hmm - is this fiction being stranger than fiction :?

Could have been worse, she could have said "that was where Enid Blyton wrote Peter Rabbit"......
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

Yes indeed, many ebay sellers have made that claim and some also seem to think that she wrote the Rupert books!
