I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Anita. I'd agree that the ending is the weakest spot. I think what I love about it is that I come to like all the girls (just), and I relish the details of their lives while they are all enjoying their first freedoms from home, finding out who they are - choosing recipes, filling their days, learning to live together, etc. I'd forgotten all about Miss Crabingway's attitude towards her age - I hope society at large didn't see it that way, and it was just another eccentricity on her part...
Gwendoline lay down, angry. She determined to make herself miserable and cry.

Yes, the little details are lovely. Have to say I sympathised with Caroline's liking for stodgy puddings!Kitty wrote: I relish the details of their lives while they are all enjoying their first freedoms from home, finding out who they are - choosing recipes, filling their days, learning to live together, etc.

Sadly, I don't suppose Enid ever had the pleasure of meeting Betty Maxey either..Tony Summerfield wrote:
I don't think that Enid even knew many of her illustrators all that well, in those days the publisher was responsible for getting the illustrators and I think Enid approved (or disapproved!) from a distance.
