The front entrance to Burley Manor, where the Five are greeted by Sooty & Marybelle in Five go to Smugglers Top! Block's tower is located to the rear of the Manor as you look at the photo!

Great pictures, Number 6! Beautiful brickwork. Pity about the palm trees though. Maybe it's just me but I don't think they suit that kind of building.

Yes, I agree with you, Anita! The palm trees do look a bit too much & out of place for my liking. Annoyingly, they hide some of the fabulous patterned brickwork.Anita Bensoussane wrote:Great pictures, Number 6! Beautiful brickwork. Pity about the palm trees though. A wider view of the Tower at the rear of Burley Manor, where Block signalled at night in Five go to Smugglers Top! I purposely took this photo just as dusk was approaching, which adds a little to the atmosphere!

The Magpie's nest souvenir shop in Burley high street, where the Five & Sooty/Marybelle pretend to be looking in the shop window as Block approaches them, & Timmy roots through a litter bin in Five go to Smugglers Top!

The Magpie's nest souvenir Shop from a different angle. As the Five & Sooty/Marybelle pretend to look in the shop window, Block passes behind them (Where the green barriers are) in Smugglers Top! In 1978 the building was White. Today, it has a dark brown exterior.
Also, where Mr Barling first meets the Kirrins.

Wide angled view of Burley Manor...or Smugglers Top...in blazing sunshine! Well worth a few minutes of your time if you're passing through the area!

The place has changed, I just can't relate it to that in the movie!! But, it's a beautiful photograph alright!number 6 wrote:The Magpie's nest souvenir shop in Burley high street, where the Five & Sooty/Marybelle pretend to be looking in the shop window as Block approaches them, & Timmy roots through a litter bin in Five go to Smugglers Top!

Sometimes things look a bit different to how you remember them, Maria Esther! If you watch the scene again, you'll see the Children run from the butchers shop to the Antiques shop (The Magpies nest)...just as Block is approaching them! The building was White back then, but is presently dark Brown..or at least it was the last time I visited Burley!

The scene outside the 'Odd Spot for Gifts' shop at Burley, where Mr Barling is seen talking to Block in the Smugglers Top episode.

Re: TV locations for the Famous Five series
I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about the ruined house "Two Trees" or the boathouse in "Hike"? Was the house a stock photo, with interiors at Exbury maybe? Wondering where it is, and the boathouse too, if either still standing, or where they were, if not.

Re: TV locations for the Famous Five series
Without my notes on the locations, I can't comment on Two Trees. However, there is an old boathouse at Sowley Pond (which I visited many years ago) that was the location for the raft scenes in Five on a hike together. I've got a gut feeling that the Two Trees location is outside the New Forest, but don't quote me on it! I'm sure Gary Russell will know, but he's checked onto the forums for a while.
In the meantime, the search for my location photos/notes goes on!
