I have always liked the early material from the Comic Strip team and "Five Go Mad in Dorset" is a top favourite of mine. It was very well filmed and the period detail was spot on.

Adrian Edmonson's performance in the role of Dick was hysterical, this was about a year before he played punk Vyvyan in "The Young Ones"

Simply spiffing! A great parody - heavily influenced by Five Get Into Trouble. The whole programme to me was a sheer delight to watch. I loved the recurring theme tune (was it Housewives' Choice?) and the great politically incorrect remarks. "He looks foreign, we'd better tell the police!" The way Timmy was poisoned twice, yet in the next shot was seen running by George's bike again! Although when they thought he was dead, Julian did say, "Never mind George, we can get another one!" So, maybe it was another one!

Toby Thurlow was obviously Richard Kent, but unlike Richard, he was kidnapped instead of Dick. I loved the denoument, and if you haven't yet seen it, go to http://www.channel4.com/od , where you can watch it again (unfortunately only in the UK).

The scenery was superb as well. Was it filmed at Corfe Castle? Somehow it didn't quite seem like the castle ruins at Corfe, but maybe our own Dorset expert, Viv, will be able to put us right.

The only thing that grated was the fact that George called her father, Uncle Quentin. With such attention given to detail, I wonder why this slipped through the net?

I didn't get the chance to watch it last night but I have it on video and have seen it at least three times. I love the waitress with her tales of "queer goings-on" - that bit always cracks me up!

And the gypsy, spending a penny as the Five cycle up! Both characters played by the wonderful Robbie Coltrane.

You can always watch it on YouTube. 8)

Part 2

Part 3

There's also a sequel - Five Go Mad on Mescalin (influenced by Five on Finniston Farm)

Part 2

Part 3

My favourite part of this second one is where Julian gives Dick a dunking after Dick embraces a sort of hippy lifestyle.

Watched this the other night, (recorded it) as good as ever.

How nice to be able to watch something have a really good laugh, without all this PC correctness spoiling the fun.

Sorry, necro posting again.

But for anyone who can access it, Channel Four's On Demand service has Five go Mad in Dorset up on their site and I think that there's another Five epsiode, but take a watch for yourself here.
"You're so sharp you'll cut yourself one day!" Hunchy said going to the door
"So my Mother told me that when I was two years old!" said Julian and the others giggled.
