I have just realised my idiotic mistake, Anita, and deleted the link! Where is Ming when I need her?

Re: Marchwood/Kirrin Station
Yeah, a pretty tame one, thankfully. It all happened in the library. My brother was borrowing a book, his friend was at the computer (there are a few computers in the library - lots more in the computer room) and I was in my class. The computer suddenly started 'spitting' and there was short-circuit (?) and a soft boom! - and the library was full of smoke. Everyone evacuated, we missed a class, and had to stay out in the field. It was so hot there that we thought the fire would be better!!
No harm done to anyone.

Glad to hear it wasn't too serious. I love the way you describe it by the way - "spitting" and "a soft boom"! I can just picture it!

Spot on - along with a scene from Five Are Together Again. It featured in two episodes of the second series, Five are Together Again and Five Go Down to the Sea.
The station scenes from "Run Away Together" and "Go down to the sea" were shot on the same day, I suppose (look at the cars and the puddles in front of the station). But I may be wrong.

Thanks a lot for this infoGary Russell wrote: Spot on - along with a scene from Five Are Together Again. On 12th July 1978, fact fans...
How come you can recall the exact day?
Was it normal that you were shooting scenes from different episodes on the same day or was it an exception?
(excuse my curiosity )

Re: Marchwood/Kirrin Station
Cos sat beside me are the call sheets for all of Series 2 (bar one day annoyingly) and a handful from Series 1! Call sheets are the daily record (prepared the night before) of what scenes are to be shot from which episodes, on which location, and which actors are required.Yan wrote:Thanks a lot for this infoGary Russell wrote: Spot on - along with a scene from Five Are Together Again. I'm annoyed I don't have more of series 1 - but I treasure them. And yes, shooting two diff eps in a day was not unusual. Not regular, but not unusual.
Re: Marchwood/Kirrin Station
I was discussing Marchwood Station with one of my work colleagues the other day. At the time he was an assistant train driver (Second Man) based at Eastleigh and remembers the Fawley line being used for the Famous Five railway scenes back in July 1978.
He was not directly involved as film and TV work was very lucrative and senior train crew had priority. Lucrative? In addition to their British Rail pay, traincrew also received expenses as well as access to the Southern TV mobile canteen. They ate very well indeed apparently. As well as feeding the actors, extras and filmcrew, Southern TV probably also fed half the population of Marchwood!
I may ask around to try and find out which traincrew were involved in the filming, there may be some interesting anecdotes to be had although I expect that they are retired by now, 1978 was a very long time ago.

Very interesting about the call sheets. They'll no doubt prove extremely useful when you come to write your memoirs, Gary!

Yes, Gary - when will you be a mad person in his nineties and start writing your memoirs?

Hi Everybody,
I'm so pleased to have found your site. Growing up in Ireland in the 80's I read all 21 FF over and over and always had a love for the 70's series. We saw it first in 81, 83 and 85. I have always been interested in finding out the locations and this site has given me most of the information I required. I always loved the FGOTC episodes with the railway yard and tunnel, and would love to know where in the Marchwood MOD area it was filmed. It looked to be very rural at the time. I don't think there is a real tunnel located at Marchwood but I could be wrong.. Was it filmed close to the harbour or closer to Marchwood Station itself?
Many thanks for a great site.

Welcome to the forums, stanmuso.
If you like to know more about the filming of "Five go off to camp" why don't you have a short look at this tread.
Five Go Off to Camp - thoughts, observations and mysteries: http://www.enidblytonsociety.co.uk/foru ... e+off+camp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
There is heaps of information there some of it about how they filmed the railwayyard/ tunnels scenes, I think.
Cheers
