Witty and/or exciting books for girls
Hi folks,
My daughter, aged 10, is just reading a book with a story of the Faraway
tree.Up to now I didn't know anything about these stories of Enid Blyton.
They are not so popular in Germany. Therefore I wondered when I was in a bookstore here in town.So I bought one.
My daughter can readout a book in a few hours. That's the reason why I'm always looking for new "food".
Could anybody advise me one or more good books ,especially for girls?
Surely, it may be a book of Enid Blyton.
Now I'm exciting what YOU will advise me(us)

Hi Tomcat,
There are some excellent "family" stories written by Enid Blyton like The Family at Redroofs, House-at-the-Corner and The Six Bad Boys. They are not part of a series - each one is a separate novel. Teenage characters play an important part and the books are ideal for readers of about Nele's age. Six Cousins at Mistletoe Farm and Six Cousins Again also deal with similar themes. However, if your daughter reads Enid Blyton in German I'm afraid I don't know whether any of those books have been translated.

If she likes Blyton, you might like to get her started on the 'Susan' books by Jane Shaw. These are from the fifties and are funny and rather charming .. less 'stuffy' and a bit more grown up than Blyton but perfectly suitable for a ten year old. There are about 12 titles in the series. Most of them can be picked up for a pound or two though there are three that can't be had for under a hundred (one of them I have seen advertised for nearly 500 pounds!). But you should have no bother gettting the first nine in the series anyway.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.
I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate.
All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Hi Mrs.Moose
Thank you.I asked my bookseller. We can't get it in Germany and in
German language.I would estimate the book for 500 pounds will cost
1000 pounds in the German form.
Thanks again.

Moose - if you're interested in the last 3 Susan books, Bettany Press have republished all three. Which is a shame, because it probably knocked £100 off the value of my copy of "Where's Susan"!
Tomcat - one German author you probably already know about is Erich Kastner - I can recommend "Lottie and Lisa", and "Emil and the Detectives" - not sure of the original German titles.

Hi dsr,

We are big Erich Kästner fans. We read the books of Emil and the Detectives, ,Annaluise and Anton,Das doppelte Lottchen(Luise and Lotte)=The ParentTrap=Charlie and Louise.
At home we've got the films on dvd.
But you've a nose for this we're looking for.
Thanks again!

Don't forget there are other Faraway Tree books: The Folk of The Faraway Tree and The Enchanted Wood, but you probably know this already. Have you tried putting Enid Blyton and German language/translations into Google or whatever search engine you use? Sorry, again you've probably thought of this already!

Thank you Tess,
Indeed, I thought of this already.I looked up on Amazon u.k+de,Wikipedia
uk+de,Google,ebay..........
And do you know what annoys me most. There are so good surviving old Blyton books on ebay.No chance..all books are in English language.
Probably for reading too bad.Perhaps for caressing, dusting and admiring in the shelf!

dsr - heh, yeah, I remember when I heard that the Susan books had been reprinted - I just found out recently - thinking that there were going to be a lot of VERY ticked off people out there who own the originals. I am glad that I will be able to get them relatively cheaply now though

Re: Witty and/or exciting books for girls
Hi Susie,
Thanks for your tips.
In the meantime my daughter read out the first omnibus of Malory Towers.
(In German named "Dolly")
She's very nutty on reading the following volumes.First I thought she doesn't like them. But now............she's like a Hoover absorbing the letters on max. power.
Also we had bought the books "Entchanted wood" and one story of the
"Faraway tree " .They were very cheap and a good investment.
Everytime when she read out a book of E.Blyton,my daughter was very
happy and wants the next one.
In her opinion ,it doesn't matter whether the books are retyped. She had a lot of fun.
Her current fav. character is Alice from Malory Towers. Alice played tricks on Madmoiselle Dupont.

When my daughter was the same age as yours she read "The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tyler" by Gene Kemp and nearly 4 years later swears it was the best book ever!
Maybe your daughter would like it?
