Years ago, I read a short story by EB. I can't remember what it was called but it featured a chicken called Mrs Chuckles. She desperately wanted to have some chicks but the Farmers Wife always took Mrs Chuckles eggs away from her . The story goes on about Mrs Chuckles attempts to hide her eggs and eventually finds a discarded umbrella. She goes in, lays eggs and a few weeks later, proudly presents her brood to the rest of the farmyard. Interestingly, I don't recall the presence of a Mr Chuckles!!!
I have recently got some chickens myself and have named one of them Mrs Chuckles after this story (although brollies are banned from her vicinity!) so I would like to get a copy of this story.
Does anyone recall the story and if so, what is it called and what book is it in?
Thx in advance
