Hi everyone
I have just registered here and I wonder if anyone can help me find this book. I remember when I was a child my sister read a story to me which I've always remembered. It was a book with a number of stories in it (it wasn't the large annual style books, it was one of the smaller books). There was a story in it about some children and I think they found a stream at the bottom of the garden. They got into a boat and the stream led to lots of caves. Each cave they went into was lit up in a different colour. It fascinated me when my sister read it to me and I would love to find out which book it came from.
Hope someone out there can shed some light on this for me.
Thanks.

Welcome to the Society, Beebie. I'm not familiar with that story but I'm sure somebody will be able to help you identify it!

I don't know this story, but there are quite a few just like it! Maybe if we knew roughly which year you heard the story, this might help us to date the books that possibly contained it...For example, might it have been a 'Dean' version, or was it older or more recent?

Welcome, Beebie! There are a few stories in The Enid Blyton Book of Fairies

in which children travel in boats and through coloured caverns, though I can't think of any that are exactly as you describe.

Thanks everyone for replying. Actually, my sister thinks I've got two stories mixed up. She remembers the caves with coloured lights story but doesn't think the children and the stream were part of this story. I seem to remember it was a red hardback book and there were a number of stories in the book. I'm not sure but there might have been goblins in the caves story. I wish I could remember more. Does this shed any more light on a possible title?

Just remembered a story called 'The Enchanted Sea,' which is about two children named Jack and Mollie who find the sea at the bottom of their garden one morning, instead of the field that is usually there. There's a boat on the sea with carved animal heads on it (a dog's head and a cat's head) and a yellow sail. The children climb into the boat, which takes them to a wizard's palace on an island. That story has appeared in several collections:
