I feel like I am going quite mad.....

A fair while ago I read a review of a book here in the cave of books (Quite possibly before it became know as the cave of books).
I can only remember some of the details of the review, and not the book title. I have since tried to find the book in the listing, and have checked all the likely titles to no avail.

Here is what I remember from the review:

2 or 3 children like dressing up.
They sneak into the empty house next door.
They get in through the coal hole and one of the children drops a brooch or badge from their costume into the coal and it has to be retrieved later.
I think the dad then helps his old friend buy the house for himself and his children (the friend lived in that house as a boy?).

Perhaps I dreamt it all, or perhaps the review has been removed but does anyone recognise this as an EB plot?

That story sounds like "The Secret of Opaltide," which was originally published in a Merry Moments Annual in the 1920s but was printed in full in Journal 33 (Summer 2007.) Perhaps you read the story there, Fiona?
