She had a big clean handkerchief in her pocket, and she took this out. "I'll tie up your hand for you," she said. "I say — what an AWFUL cut! I should howl like anything if I did that to myself."
What wonderful memories does it bring to mind! :D

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

What about this one?
‘You hateful creature! Nothing but a nasty little circus-girl with circus-girl ideas! Oh you think I don’t know things about you, but I do! I saw you take the frog out of the vivarium to make him leap on me. I saw you!’

Here's another quote from the same book:
‘Have you found the poor little kitten, Hilary?’ she called. ‘Oh, Mam’zelle, isn’t it a shame? It will be so frightened.’

Also from the book:
The two girls went to find the horse. Jim had it outside the caravan. Carlotta jumped up and spoke to Jim.
‘Thanks for doing all you did,’ she said. ‘I won’t forget it. Hold your tongue about everything, won’t you?’
‘You bet!’ said Jim. ‘It’s all in the day’s work. Come and see us again, Carlotta. I always say and I always shall say you’re wasted at school—you ought to be in a circus like you’ve always been—handling horses. You’re a marvel with them.’

I can now narrow it down to say the quote comes from the St Clare's books, but wouldn't be able to say which one exactly

St. Clare's is of course correct. A little hint: In which of the books does Carlotta feature most?

Not my turn, but just to get the thread going again as there actually hasn't been a new one set since March...

"Anne felt sorry for the queer old man, but she kept well behind Julian... 'Ain't you got no tongues in your 'eads? Am I seeing things again, or are you there?' 'We're here and we're real,' said Julian."

Yes, well done, Irene
It was Wooden Leg Sam down in the old railway yard.
