     I think it might be easier than identifying the states of the U.S., although I'm guessing there'd be a few obstinate outlines that few would identify. It would probably be easier if all were drawn to the same scale, which I'm pretty sure the states of the U.S. aren't in those outlines.

Yes it is, Courtenay. Just Arkansas, Connecticut, Kansas, New Mexico & Wisconsin to go now - numbers 23,26,29,39 & 40 - but which is which? :D

I'll say 39 is Wisconsin and 40 is New Mexico... and I THINK 26 is Connecticut.

     With only two left, even a guess would have a 50 percent chance of being correct; but I do have a hunch that Kansas is one of the close-to-rectangular states, so I will suggest 23 for Kansas - so it's a bit more than a guess. That leaves only 29 for Arkansas.
     Unlike Kansas,I do not have even a hunch about Arkansas or the remaining shape. It looks like a coastline on the right of it, so I was trying to think of eastern states - but none are left. Then I realized that it was probably a river forming the eastern boundary.
