Book: In The Sea of Adventure, Jack takes some pictures of the birds on the cliffs and Bill says, "You'll have to have a book of bird photographs published. Masterpieces, by Jack Trent, price thirty shillings." Jack replies, "I'd like that. Not the thirty shillings I mean - but having a book about birds with my name on it."

Stone: The 'lucky stone' which features in a short story of the same name, in 'Boys and Girls New Chronicle Number 3 -
It's an amusing story about a man who has a day filled with luck because he has a lucky blue stone in his pocket. He throws the stone away at the end - after selling a donkey to a king for £100. So the stone is somewhere waiting to be found again!

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Rotten: In the story 'Granny's Bad Apple', Denis ignores a tiny bruise on one of the apples which he's storing in the loft. Months later, the apple has become "rotten from top to bottom" and has also turned nineteen other apples bad around it. Granny draws parallels with a boy named Sammy who is a negative influence on others, and Enid Blyton finishes the tale with an appeal to the reader: "Are you a good apple? I hope so!"

Fair: Rilloby Fair - the first Barney book I ever bought, for 10p with a dust wrapper from a school jumble sale was 'The Rilloby Fair Mystery'. One of my favourite Barney books!

Ball: "The Lost Golden Ball" from The Enid Blyton Book of Fairies — a particularly heartwarming story about an ugly and lonely gnome who finds a friend and a new calling in life (as well as the lost ball) in, of all places, London's own Hampstead Heath!
