I have to say, Daisy, that I agree with you about the country's name. Enid was hopeless at coming up with names of fictional countries that sounded even half-way plausible. Anthony Hope gave us Ruritania and Peter Ustinov came up with Monrovia. (I wonder if anyone else remembers that wonderful line from 'Romanoff and Juliet' where the Ambassador says, "Monrovia is a country so small that it only appears in the very best atlases. It is usually coloured a dispeptic mint green, which misses the outline by a fraction, so that you can almost hear the printer's 'damn!' ")
Birra Bonga-Woo vaguely sounds as if it is meant to be African. Now pre-colonial Africa did have some countries with odd-sounding names such as Songhai, Damergou, Taganit, Hodh, Tibesti, Wadai, Borgu and Enndi, but Enid's is just plain daft.

I halfly suspect that Enid must have heard of/read about Bandar(city in Malay) Seri Begawan(the name of the place) in Brunei and her mind must have played the trick when she wanted new place in her story where prince and princess originated from. Brunei royal family is one of the richest royal family in the world. Coincidently, there is a name of Prince Bongawah in The Mystery of Vanished Prince.

Bandar Seri Begawan(also known as Bongawan- old name)

Birri Bonga-Woo

Prince Bongawah

I am not sure but there are two words that have bad meaning in your list, Dave. And Wadai was the name of Sultan(King) in Africa. :lol:

I guessed it must have come from a book I had never heard of, let alone read!

Wild guess:

Eileen Soper illustrated many Little Books?
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

Thanks, Ilsa. It's me who has to thank Fiona for almost getting it this time. You were on the right track well before me, Fiona. :D

Here's the new one:

+++ / +++++ / +++++ - +++++ / +++++ / +++ / ++++ / ++++++ / +++++++

The third word is hyphenated.
