Re: Hangman
Actually, forget the M!
I'll try:
There was once a golliwog who loved frightening people.

Re: Hangman
And how right you are to try it, Anita!
Two things occur to me: this is one example where EB did write about a golly being despicable; and what a lot of stories she wrote that began "There was once ....."!
So what did old Clever Clogs Jumbo do? I suppose he went up to him and said, "I'm not afraid of you, Golly. Only one thing frightens me - mice! I've heard they crawl up your trunk and run around inside your head." Shudders at the thought.
Your turn to be 'Hangman Harry' or, if you prefer, 'Harriet'.

Re: Hangman
Thanks, Dave! When I asked for M I was thinking along the lines of:
There was once a magician who hated +++++TE++++ people.
Then I worked out that the penultimate word could be "frightening" so I had a rethink!
Next one:

Perhaps an A?
'Go down to the side-shows by the river this afternoon. I'll meet you somewhere in disguise. Bet you won't know me!' wrote Fatty.
