They can tie the stones to the thread and tie the other end of the thread to the rope. Then when they throw up the stones, Anne can catch them, and pull the string up.... behind which comes the rope. She can secure the rope, now dangling.. to the branch.. and shin down. Halfway, when the rope ends, she'll be low enough to jump!

Perhaps because nobody could think of another predicament for the captives (whether by accident or design) to escape from?

All right, Darrell - try solving this: :)
_________________________________________________________________________________________________
The Famous Five are walking down a street when they come to a dead end. A bunch of muggers is coming towards them.
North is the dead end, covered with some ivy, which might or might not hold the wait of either of the children.
South and East are blocked my the muggers.
West, there is thick jungle.
Beyond the dead end there is a police station, but the wall is too high. All Julian has is a string and a pocket knife, and every second counts, as the muggers are coming closer... what will you suggest to the Famous Five now?

Perhaps the children could run into the jungle (or maybe, more realistically forest?) but without the intention of finding the way out at the other side. Julian could mark the trees with his pocket knife and he and the children could hide a little further in until the muggers either get lost, or give up! Then they could easily (in the confidence that the muggers are not lying in waiting where they left them) follow their marks on the trees back out of the jungle, forest or woodland! :D

Good solution, Poppy! Not the one I had in mind, but still a good one.
Anyone else care to post another solution here, or should I announce Poppy as the winner then?
