7up, does the word "try" mean nothing to you?
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

Easy new one:

Six Children. Two families... One 'namby pamby', one rough.
In came the Taggertys. They were clean, except Biddy knees looked like she had been crawling half a mile in some muddy place.

Those Dreadful Children (I was giving someone else the chance to answer seeing as it was me who hadn't posted a new Q in time).

Couldn't this also be the "Six Cousins" books?
If the clues are cryptic enough, there are usually a number of books they could refer to.

A horse's life is threatened, and someone is offered temporary membership of an secret gang. Money is raised, the horse is saved but the story isn't over.

It could have been Six Cousins, as you said, but I don't believe the word 'namby pamby' was in Six Cousins.

Well, I get the feeling some of these summaries are merely paraphrasing the original blurbs or text, not using the same literal words.
If I can successfully answer a question (and post it before anyone else gets in), I'll see if I can come up with one myself. I gather it's okay to change the wording of the plot summary as much as you like, as long as the meaning of it still applies to the story.

I think this is "Fun for the Secret Seven", and Bob Smith is the temporary member of the Secret Seven. And I assume the bit about the story not being over yet is referring to the late episode where the horse-thieves break in to try to steal Tolly's horse, until they are deflated a bit by being jabbed with a pitchfork!

The mystery seems to increasingly centre around the entrance to a secret place, which seems to suck things down into it without ever disgorging anything, until finally some of the children are sucked down there also, and end up helpless in a very tight corner from which they may not have escaped without sudden outside help.

That's my paraphrase, of course - a literal description would make it too obvious. If it's too cryptic, I'll try and rephrase, if people want.

Ooops - sorry: I forgot to wait for confirmation of the correctness of my answer before posting my own. Shall I just leave it in case I'm right (I feel pretty sure of it, actually)?
Could we actually speed things up a bit here by having several questions on the table at the same time, anyway?
