Isn't 50 - 75 words a little on the short side? To put it into perspective your first post in this thread has about 95 words, iluveb. How about accepting entries up to about 200 words?

Re: The Mega Writing Competition
As you've set a deadline of a fortnight, the competition shouldn't take up too much space overall and the essays will be more interesting to read if people have a bit more scope to say what they want to say. I see you've edited the word limit again, so entries can now be up to 200 words.
I might participate, but it depends on whether I have the time.

Re: The Mega Writing Competition
Here goes:
Most Interesting book-The Mystery of Tally-Ho Cottage
I just love this, the twelfth book about the Five Find Outers and Dog, involving a priceless stolen painting,Fattys masterclass of disguises and some great humour, which still makes me laugh out loud!-(Think of Mr Goon following 'Larkin' who ends up going round the childrens playground to the utter mystification of Goon!)
Ern Goon plays a valuable role in this mystery and lucklily for the Find outers his onomatopoeically named Aunt Mrs Woosh, lives close by in the cottage right next door to Tally-Ho Cottage!
Its a really good mystery this one, with lots of really good juicy clues, including a stolen rubber bone, the sound of swans splashing down by the river, the way Mrs. Larkin changes towards poppet, (Bets inspired observation;"I'm glad that horrrid Mrs. Larkin is so much nicer to dear little Poppet. She might be Mrs. Lorenzo the way she fusses her now")......which proves to be her downfall!
I distinctly remember the day my mum came home to our own cottage, one dark, dank, cold December night, fully laden with bags and bags of shopping and said 'I got you this book.'It seemed to fit the cold winter time of year we ourselves were experiencing perfectly with its colourful depiction of children prancing round a winter bonfire, poking excitedly at something..
I was also greatly impressed by the account of Fatty, disguised as Larkin bumping into 'Larkin',who as we know was really Lorenzo, himself disguised as Larkin! This to me was to me an utterly brilliant concept by Enid......(I always wished and wished the real Larkin could also have appeared somehow before the hapless Goon,so he could have been confronted by THREE LARKINS!)
And the ending, what an ending! Just as we think, please Fatty dont make an ass of yourself with this one and get it wrong,we read with bated breath.....
They all went out of the cottage, and watched the sergeant take a rug from the washing-line. Goon stood near to Mrs. Lorenzo, and the Chief was beside Bill Lorenzo - just in case!
The rug was slit open - and inside, just as Fatty had said, was .........(read book to find out! )
.........
Praise From their friend The Inspector....
Frederick, I think this last remarkable - yes, truly remarkable feat of yours deserves a celebration! You’ve surpassed yourself, my boy. My word, how I shall enjoy myself when you come to work for me!’
‘Thank you, sir,’ said Fatty modestly. ‘May I suggest, sir, that as it’s rather cold, we all go to my shed and celebrate there? I know our cook’s making mince-pies today, sir, and I’ve got a few things I’d like to show you - a new set of false teeth, sir, and a gadget to make large ears, and...’
The Chief roared. ‘Large ears! Why don’t you invent something in the way of large brains, Frederick - and hand a few out to poor old Goon?’
‘That’s an idea, sir!’ said Fatty grinning, and off they all went, Ern too. What a morning!
We can’t follow them, alas! The shed door is shut and there is a fine smell of mince-pies on the air. Hey, Fatty, don’t wait too long for another mystery, will you!
All in all a most remarkable book, most interesting, exciting and eminently readable and indeed re-readable!
Regards Pete

Re: The Mega Writing Competition
Interesting read, Pete. I read the same Red Dragon edition too, for the first time, in 1978 or thereabouts. You're right -- there's something very dark and 'wintery' about this adventure. I enjoyed the humour too. But maybe you shouldn't have given away so much of the plot, in case people who aren't familiar with the book come across your review and are tempted to read it?
